I, like most, thought that my dependence on the grid was like my dependence on food.
Thanks to Thomas Edison, my digital alarm clock and coffeemaker are the first to greet me each morning. Simply, we are wired. We are tethered to our appliances, computers, and reliable light. Worse, it is the grid that supplies our life blood of Facebook, CNN, and the Weather channel. God, the horror those poor people must have been in after the hurricane. A million lost souls without Twitter, sexting, Netflix and PlayStation 3.
A while back I began to wonder if the term “Power Company” refers to the service they provide or the power they hold over us. Not environmentally conscious, socially responsible, or forward thinking, my personal rebellion against the electric grid began with some hillbilly on YouTube. I had to figure out how to recharge the battery on a giant camper sitting in the middle of a hay field. Who else would you consult other than some nearly unintelligible guy from Tennessee making homemade videos of his homemade solar panels? After all, it is really a mobile home or parked trailer.
Mobile home or millionaire mansion, more people are looking to solar energy as a more eco-responsible solution to the energy problems facing the nation. Small personal systems are appearing on rooftops across the country.
